When people hear the words today’s avant-garde art, they may think of something French and European or art that could only be curated from megacities like New York or Los Angeles.

Simply said, avant-garde is a French word for advance guard or vanguard. In the art world the word has been tied to innovation, pushing cultural boundaries, creating works initially unknown or unaccepted, and many other things.

Today there are lots of avant-garde things happening around the world, and some of them are being created from right here in the beautiful Great Lakes region. Evidence-based is a new avant-garde way of designing. Architects, interior designers, and even artists like me are using credible medical studies to guide and influence our designs.

When I create gestural abstracts or even minimalist art, I do this from my soul out. The creation of this non-evidence-based art originates from the deepest parts of my personal inner being and then I push or channel it outwards using paint and tools and brushes and different artistic techniques.

When I create evidence-based art, my entire approach to designing is completely new (avant-garde) and different. I start with credible design knowledge based on actual medical studies. In my case, I have an abundance of background knowledge to do this because I went through the very rigorous academic process (like many architects, interior designers, healthcare pros) of getting evidence-based design certified.

Since human health and healing is at stake, I take this very seriously. Always mindful of my training, I lay out evidence-based designs/scenes; evidence-based colors; evidence-based techniques; and always make sure the moods I create through the art actually promote/influence/inspire/impact (without any stress) the health and healing of others.

This kind of avant-garde art isn’t just about putting pretty flowers on canvas and using Nature or a Great Lake as a background and calling it evidence-based qualified.

It goes so much deeper. It’s about using in-depth knowledge, based on medical studies, to create works of art with health and healing properties. “This makes me smile!” “That lifts me up!” “I do feel better when a painting like this hangs on the wall!”

This is the goal of today’s avant-garde movement of evidence-based art—happening even from right here…in a cute little art studio…along the shores of one of the Great Lakes…in beautiful Northern Michigan.
