Winter is still here, and there’s still snow all around, but that doesn’t mean I have to surround myself with the colors white and grey.

I recently completed thirteen new Great Lakes Lovelies 11”x14” acrylic paintings. I was taught to paint in oil when I was 7/8 years old, but now that I make my own decisions, I really prefer working with acrylics. Although I love the smoothness of Golden products, I keep going back to Liquitex professional acrylic paint.

Both the heavy and soft body acrylics work wonderfully for me, and the super-fast drying time can’t be beat. For these new thirteen paintings, I used the Great Lakes as the background. I often walk down the street to Lake Huron. Officially, it’s three blocks away, right at the end of the art studio’s street, but it really only takes about two minutes to arrive.

I have also spent lots of time at a stretch of US-23 Heritage Highway, with a super cool walking/bike path, just outside Rogers City, Michigan. Then there are the views I’ve used in my art from Traverse City, Petoskey, St. Ignace, the Straits of Mackinac, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Parry Sound (on Georgian Bay), Ontario, and Toronto, Ontario, and the list goes on and on. My plan this Spring and Summer is to travel around the Great Lakes, probably heading West, and take background shots for the paintings I’ll do next winter. I’m so excited!
